By the 6th century, the peoples inhabiting central Thailand were mainly Mon, an ethnic group linguistically related to the Khmer. In terms of faith, the Mon tended towards Buddhism, while the Khmer preferred Hinduism. A kingdom called Dvaravati, part of a confederation of Mon polities located about 200 km from modern Bangkok, flourished from the 6th to 11th century and was the founding place for a distinctive school of art and architecture.

By the 10th or 11th century, Mon dominance had been superseded by the Khmer. With its centre at Angkor, the Khmer civilisation spread through political and cultural expansion. Such was the influence of Cambodia that the Khmer art style as found in Thailand is termed the Lopburi school.

The arrival of the Tai people (T’ai), most probably from south and southeast China, gradually changed the ethnic composition of the local population. The waning Khmer power in the 13th century facilitated the growth of Tai dominated kingdoms such as Suphanburi, Lanna and above all, Sukhothai.

By the mid-13th century, the Sukhothai kings not only established the first Thai royal dynasty but also promoted Theravada Buddhism, the dominant national faith since the ancient Dvaravati culture. In the Sukhothai kingdom, an outstanding tradition of sculpture, painting and architecture, emerged, which remain significant and alive today. The kingdom also held two important ceramic centres, Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, suppling local and international markets.

The most extraordinary invention of Sukhothai art and high point of Thai sculpture is the Walking Buddha, distinguished in that it is represented fully, in the round. Before the 13th century most Buddha images were designed to be viewed from the front and are thus not particularly rewarding when seen from the rear or side.

By the mid-14th century, the kingdom of Ayutthaya emerged in the south, 80 km inland from the Gulf of Thailand, and soon the older kingdom of Sukhothai become its vassal. A century later it was incorporated into the Ayutthaya kingdom, although its culture and economy continued to influence and thrive. The important ceramic industry of Sukhothai kingdom was hardly affected, and exports peaked in the 15th and early 16th century.
