ROOM – 22

The early kingdoms of Myanmar

In the early first millennium AD, the Pyu people, ethnolinguistically related to the Tibetans, and the Mon, related to the Cambodian Khmer, established the first two polities to emerge in Burma, modern-day Myanmar. The Pyu favoured the Buddhist faith. Like those in Thailand, the Mon in southern Myanmar were early adopters of the Buddhist faith, favouring the Theravada Buddhism.

During the 9th century, the Mranma, an ethnic group from the northeast entered along the Irrawaddy valley; like the Pyu, this people was related to the Tibetans. The Mranma settled mainly in Upper Myanmar and made the former Pyu area of Bagan their capital for approximately three hundred years (about 11th to 13th centur.). During this period, the newcomers gradually absorbed the long established Pyu. Bagan witnessed a boom in construction of nearly 3,000 religious related structures, a development the Buddhist world had seen neither before nor since. In the 14th century the capital moved upriver to Ava, or Inwa, after which, temple construction at Pagan slowed dramatically. In the 19th c., the capital was again relocated to nearby Mandalay.
