Vietnam is rich in ancient cultures which stem from both local traditions and external influences. Its long coastline enabled cultural and commercial exchanges with merchants passing through the South China Sea.
The ancient Bronze Age culture of Dong Son thrived from the end of the 2nd century BC to the middle of the first millennium. As early as the 3rd century BC, the Chinese had begun to take an interest in the Red River basin. This transitional period was marked by the development of a hybrid culture in which Chinese forms accommodated Dong Son traditions. Until the 10th century, northern Vietnam was under direct Chinese rule. Chinese culture dominated the economy, administration, religions and the arts. Dispersed along small coastal plains, in central and southern Vietnam prospered Champa polities which were very much dependent on trade with the mountain peoples and merchants attracted to their riverine locations, and with them, Buddhist monks and learned Brahmins came along, introducing Indian religions and culture.
In the early 11th century, the Viets in the north, finally established a national dynasty, the Ly (1010–1225), with its capital, Thang Long (modern Hanoi), ending the Chinese domination.
