In the 8th century, Tang capital, Chang’an (modern Xi’an), lay at one end of the Silk Road and was thus the destination for a diverse mix of foreigners from Central Asians These immigrants worked as merchants, pedlars, acrobats and musicians, but their forte occupation was the management of camels and horses, in which they had more experience than the Chinese.
