Its acquisition was based on the criteria of rarity and artistic quality, placing it on par with international collections, displayed in major museums.

Comprising approximately 1300 objects, the collection covers a wide diversity of artworks from various regions of Asia, with pieces from fourteen countries: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, East Timor, and the Philippines.
The incorporation of this collection into the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa complements the vision conveyed by the Church and Museum of São Roque, offering the public the opportunity to explore the essence of the art and culture of various Asian civilizations through excellent examples, many of which are unique.
This collection of exceptional value was conceived with the purpose of promoting knowledge and understanding of Asian cultures, highlighting their cultural, historical, and social diversity, as well as going beyond the mere encounter between the Portuguese and the Asian continent.
