Blue and white ceramics

Vietnamese potters were quick to master underglaze iron painting. This technique was used to great advantage in the later production of blue and white wares. With the refinement of this method in the second half of the 14th century, production of monochrome wares and those with Buddhist motifs declined and blue and white decoration developed.

The Chinese Ming occupation of North Vietnam from 1407 to 1427, gave a new impetus to this new style, but Vietnamese blue and white developed distinctive forms and decorative motifs. By the early 16th century, the decoration of Vietnamese blue and white become more abstract and more standardised, and quality declined.
