Handle of ceremonial “fan”

Ivory work was a specialty of ateliers in the kingdom of Kandy (1591–1815) and also those of Kotte. Important ivory items were created specifically for high-ranking monks including large ceremonial fans, or vatapata (Sinhalese), with intricately sculpted handles.
