Glazed terracotta plaques
Glazed thick terracotta plaques, of beige to reddish colour, modelled or moulded in relief and decorated with either pictorial scenes or geometric motifs, were used in Myanmar to decorate temples and stupas, since the Bagan period.
The Mon King Dhammaceti (about 1470–1492) of Bago (Pegu), in Lower Myanmar commissioned a huge religious complex, between 1470 and 1480, which was then covered with hundreds of these terracotta plaques, representing the period of time Buddha spent at Bodh Gaya, during and following his enlightenment. Due to the encroaching jungle, today most of the monuments are in ruins at Bago.
