Tray

Negoro lacquer is traditionally associated with the Negoro-ji Buddhist temple (founded 12th century), but was also manufactured elsewhere in the Kamakura (1185–1392) and Muromachi (1392–1575) periods.

These wares, mostly in wood, are lacquered with a base coat of black over which a coat of red lacquer is applied. Over time, the red coat wears revealing the black undercoat, often with an abstract visual effect.
