Large Buddhist inspired vase
This impressive vase is noteworthy not only for its size and elaborate decoration, but also for the unusual glaze. This resembles the type of lead glaze seen on pottery rather than the celadon glazes of similar vases. This massive vessel is one of the most striking examples of its kind. Ceramic receptacles of such dimensions had rarely been made in China before the 6th century and required new skills in forming and firing.
With its rich ornamentation, the Buddhist significance of this type of jar is indicated through high-relief appliqués designed to evoke cabochon jewels and lotus petals. The lower part of the tall neck is applied with masks of monsters. The upper part has four medallions, two enclosing dragons with apsaras (celestial beauties) above and two showing Buddha on a lotus pedestal flanked by additional apsaras.
