Presented in English

With a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Hannah Sigur has researched the material culture and traditional arts of Japan and East Asia and their international influence, particularly in America’s Golden Age. She collaborates with universities in California, USA, and Lisbon, Portugal, as well as with Smarthistory.org. She has published work on the influence of Japanese art on design in the second half of the 19th century and on modern design before the Great War.

Synopsis

In 1889, Abel Acácio de Almeida Botelho posed for António Ramalho to be portrayed. In the work, Botelho does not appear with the symbols of his illustrious military and diplomatic career, but rather as an intellectual, surrounded by objects from Japan and China. In this lecture, Hannah Sigur will use the portrait as a portal to a larger universe, through Japanese prints, Chinese ceramics and other related arts, from the perspective of where they were produced, their significance to the collectors who acquired them, as well as their transformative influence on Western design.
