Thai and Lao storage jars

Large glazed and unglazed jars were produced in many kiln centres in northern and central Thailand, mainly for the domestic market. Stylistically these wares appear to represent an evolution from Khmer and early Sawankhalok unglazed jars. Some drew inspiration from 9th century Dvaravati wares and 10th century Mon ceramics made from Lumphun (formerly Haripunchai).

These large jars of the Lanna and Lao kilns (Phayao, Sankampaeng, Kalong, Nan and Phan and Vientiane) excel in both form and glaze. They functioned as storage jars for water or fermented foods, for rice wine used in rituals, but also as burial jars.
