Zodiac symbols

In Myanmar, zodiac symbols and those of the days of the week are often sources of inspiration for wood carvers and lacquer craftsmen. The wooden figures on display were previously attached to large teak wooden pillars inside a Buddhist temple and represent three different days of the week. The lion is the symbol for Tuesday, the southeast direction, the planet Mars and new challenges. The elephant without tusks symbolises Wednesday afternoon, the northeast, the mythical planet Ya-hu, and love. The rat is the symbol for Thursday, the west, the planet Jupiter and power and glory.
