Vaishnavite silk lampas
This textile, woven in the complex lampas technique, belongs to a small but famous group, associated with the major Vaishnavite sects centred around the 16th century charismatic spiritual leader Sankaradeva in Barpeta, Assam. All the textiles in this group have in common motifs depicting scenes from the lives of the avatars of Vishnu, and used in rituals in temples.
